Veloz Wins Weedon Memorial
East Moline, IL (May 4) - On a beautiful Sunday night at the Quad City Raceway, 75 cars in four divisions check into the
pits to compete for the 3rd Annual J&J Campers Ronnie Weedon Memorial. It was also opening point night with last week’s
season opener getting canceled.
The night got under with a make-up UMP 4 Cylinder feature from two weeks ago. The 39G of R.J. Gonzales grabbed the
early lead and never looked back. The 17M of Mike Morrow and the 13 of Shawn Pappas battled for second with Pappas
getting by Morrow and pulling up on Gonzales’ bumper before pulling off the track with mechanical problems. Gonzales
would hold off a late charge by the 25 of Andy Bickle and take home his first career victory. Bickle would hold onto second
followed by Craig Jones in the CJ1, Morrow, and Joseph Wagner in the 6.
In the other UMP 4 Cylinder feature the 2007 Quad City Raceway 4 Cylinder Track Champion, the D26 of Wade Dahl, was
lightening fast. He quickly took the lead over from the 27D of Dan Keltner and was not challenged the rest of the race.
Dahl would lead the rest of the way taking home the win. Keltner finished second followed by the 44 of Devo Timmerman,
17M of Mike Morrow, and the 6 of Joseph Wagner. Heat races went to Dahl and Keltner.
In the UMP Street Stock feature Buck Harmening in the 63 grabbed the early lead with the 01 of Ron Marks Jr. right on
him. Harmening would bring out a yellow ending his night, so Marks would take over the lead. The real battle for a few laps
was for third between the 8L of Chris Lawrence, the 03 of Chris Hambright, the 6K of Korey Peterson, and the 28 of Greg
Gill. These guys were racing three and four wide for several laps. Gill would eventually win that battle and get by Bahrs for
second too. He then set his sights on Marks. Marks proved he had the better car and held off Gill for the feature win. Gill
would come second and win the JC Dubil Hard Charger Award passing eight cars in the feature. Bahrs, Lawrence, and
Hambright would round out the top 5. The heat race winners were Bahrs and Hambright.
In the IMCA Late Model, Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame Inductee, the 58 of Hershel Roberts, would take the early lead
with Rob Toland, driving Jason Masongarb’s number 30, right on his bumper. The 14 of Mike Murphy Jr. would soon join
the race for the lead too. Roberts held off both Toland and Murphy until Toland moved up from the bottom groove to the
middle groove and finally got by Roberts. Murphy would get by Roberts too and then he was challenged by a hard
charging Ray Guss Jr. in the 12. For several laps Murphy and Guss would fight for second. Guss would eventually get by
Murphy and start closing in on Toland for lead. Toland’s lead would prove to be too big and he would take home the
victory. Guss finished second followed by Murphy, the Jeremy Gustaf in the 86 who had a great run, and Roberts. Heat
races went to the Murphy, G1 of Mike Garland, and the 46 of Nate Beuseling.
The featured event of the evening was the J&J Campers 3rd Annual Ronnie Weedon Memorial for the UMP Modifieds.
Right when the green waved to get the feature going Milo Veloz Jr. in the 43 and Marty Thompson in the 25 began battling
for the lead. Meanwhile the 32 of Donovan Lodge and the 10 of Jake Waterman began weaving their way through traffic
moving towards the front. Several cautions would keep the field bunched up for most of the race with Veloz and Thompson
continuing to fight for the lead. Thompson would try the middle groove to get the lead but Veloz proved to be strong and
would take the checkered flag and win the Ronnie Weedon Memorial. Thompson would take second followed by
Waterman, Lodge, and the 77 of Ray Bollinger.
