Bohmsach Finally Finds the Front in Golden Sands Opener

by Mike Barrett
Wisconsin Rapids, WI (May 9) - Keith Bohmsach of Wisconsin Rapids topped a large field of Late Model racers Friday
night with a long-awaited Feature win. 3 years of Late Model racing and only his 2nd win on a Friday made this a sweet
one, especially after an off-season of changes and experimentation. Bohmsach confided that “we didn’t know if all the stuff
we did would work”, but the payoff was a fast car that was challenged only briefly by Frank Nitzke of Berlin, until the #18 of
“Fast Frankie” suffered a carburetor problem mid-race, finishing 4th. The start looked like it was going to be a close race,
with Bohmsach and Nitzke trading the lead. The 10 lap mark saw Frank and Keith side by side, with Keith taking the lead
soon after and Frank’s car beginning to stutter under acceleration. Bohmsach had no real challengers, but the racing was
hot from 3rd on back, drivers like Eugene Gregorich, Mark Mackesy, Eswein and Fast Qualifier Chris Weinkauf trying
different lines to find speed. The outside lane had little grip, and the passing was tough to accomplish. Finishing in 2nd
was Mark Eswein of Wisconsin Rapids, Chris Weinkauf 3rd and Nitzke and Jason Weinkauf 4th and 5th.

Kwik trip Super Stock Racing was the usual action-packed event. Don Zuehlke of Omro Nearly kept the field at bay the
entire race, until Galen Manternach of Nekoosa thrashed through the traffic to take the feature win by passing Zuehlke on
the outside with a mere 5 laps to go. Greg Bach driving the #71 car picked up where Brian left off last year, setting fast
time, only to suffer a lap 7 incident that took him out. The last 7 Laps were green offering Manternach a chance to work his
way around Zuehlke and post the 1st Feature win of 2008 in Super Stocks. Zuehlke finished 2nd, Adam Krzykowski of
Sherry was 3rd, Gary Wosick originally of Nekoosa finished a hard-fought 4th and Dean Zakrzewski maintained 5th after
starting alongside Zuehlke.

The Track Crew at Golden Sands worked hard to keep the races rolling for the loyal opening night fans in the evening
chilly air and the third feature; The 4 Cylinder Stock Class rolled out immediately following the Late Model Main. Corey
Stephens of Waupaca worked past the entire group getting to his win, followed by Lucas Betro, Cody Heath, Joachim
Mangen, and Alycia Linzmeier.

The 4 Cylinder Mod class was filled out well, and JJ Flick of Wisconsin Rapids Gained an incredible amount of ground in
the late going to finish in style, passing Bradley Conant on the final lap to win the Feature. Dale Robinson chalked up a 3rd
place run, and Josh Opper and Jeremy Kemnetz rounded out the top 5.

The Cruisers as well are now split into Stock and Mod Classes, Dodson and Dodson taking the stock win, followed by
Kealiher and Johnson, and McDonald and McDonald.

The Mod Class was larger, faster, wilder, and smokier, ending with Dean and McDonald up front leading Spritka and Berg,
along with Wellens and Bauer.

Notables were the Fast Time posted by Late Model racer Chris Weinkauf in a Kirsling prepared #99, Colin Reffner at 14
winning his FIRST Super Stock race, and more than a few new drivers moving up to faster classes.
