Weather Changes Kalamazoo Speedway Action
Kalamazoo, MI (April 26) - The weather that has plagued the Kalamazoo Speedway early this season continued to play
havoc this Saturday as the Speedway hosted Autograph Night featuring the 5-in-1 show, including the debut of the new
Cyber Stock division. The call was made early in the day to scrap the heat races for the evening, and run 6 car dash races
for each division and features to help get race fans home at a early hour.
The fan favorite autograph session was first up, as the cars and stars of the Kalamazoo Speedway took to the racetrack,
and the spectators were welcomed down on the track for autograph cards, racecar photos, candy, and much more. Drivers
Todd Foote and Bryan VanZile were offering 2 bikes to give away throughout the night, as 4 lucky kids went home with a
brand new bicycle. In addition to the bikes, the VanZile racing team was also giving away some Applebee's Gift
Certificates. A special thanks to Victory Motorsports, VanZile Racing, as well as T&J Towing for offering the giveaways.
The Cyber Stock division, the new low budget entry level division to the Speedway were the first up on the card, running
two 6 lap dashes. Plenty of great racing action took place in both dash races, with Larry Peloquin and Travis "Tiny" Krum
taking the victories. The feature for the new division saw many things happening, as the field came to the green flag 5
wide. Fast qualifier Dale Leonard was able to pick up the win in the feature over Brett Knight, Brian Neece, Krum, and
Shawn Misak.
The Pure Stock division saw plenty of drama before the feature even started, as point leader and last weeks feature
winner Butch Glass, along with Brad Shellenbarger both had problems in getting the cars to fire. Glass was able to take
the green flag, but Shellenbarger was done for the evening. Pole sitter Jimmy Wheaton jumped out to an early lead over
Ron Chaffee, Jr. Fast qualifier Matt Noble moved to the top of the racetrack, and took very little time to make it to the front
of the field. At the end of the 20 lap feature, Matt Noble collected his first win of the season over Lloyd Brooks, Greg
Haynes, Jacob Caines, and Jamison Russell. The fast car dash went to Shellenbarger.
Next, the Sportsman cars took to the Speedway, with pole sitter Mitch DeWitt and front row starter Clay Rogers taking the
green flag. Last week's feature winner Courtney Weston quickly moved through the field and into the lead, as Bryan
VanZile carved his way up to run 2nd. VanZile drove around Weston, and into the lead taking the victory in the main event.
Behind VanZile at the checkered flag was fast qualifier Rick VanHouten, Weston, Mark Horton, and Travis Hall. VanZile
also collected the dash win.
The Modified division took to the racetrack for their 30 lap feature. Front row starters Chris Orr and Chris Shannon took
the field to green. Orr took the lead early on in the feature and would not look back, holding off charges from defending
Champion Harry Foote Jr. the entire race. Foote, Jr. finished in the runner up spot, Brian Bergakker was 3rd, with fast
timer Mark Shook and A.J. Foote rounding out the top 5. The Modified fast car dash went to Jeff Ganus.
The Outlaw Late Model rolled out for their 50 lap main event to cap off the evening. Pole Sitter Ryan Wheeler and Todd
Currier paced the field to green. Todd Currier took the early lead. Andy Bozell was the car on the move early, from his
eighth starting spot, he drove through the field quickly and challenged Currier for the lead. Once Bozell got the lead, he set
sail and pulled away to nearly a straightaway lead. At lap 34, contact between Brandon Lyons and Mike Brooks sent the
Brooks machine into the wall and flipping upside down into turn 1. Brooks was quickly able to climb from the car under red.
Phil Bozell was running second just before the red, and this allowed the field to tighten back up going to the restart. The
last 15 laps of the race saw a clinic being put on by A. Bozell, P. Bozell, and Freddy Campbell. P. Bozell jumped to the high
side of the racetrack challenging his father for the race lead, but Andy slammed the door each time off turn 4. With two laps
to go, Phil made a strong run down the backstretch and was able to pull along side of the leader. The leaders were side
by side and Campbell briefly looked to make it three wide on the backstretch coming to the white flag. Phil and Andy has a
classic drag race the final lap, with son Phil beating Andy off turn 4 and to the checkers. Campbell was 3rd, and Todd
Currier and Dave Sensiba completing the top 5. Fast time went to Campbell of the 31 Late Models on hand. Dave Lober
picked up the Last Chance win, and Rick Sexton won the fast car dash.
Next Saturday the Speedway plays host to a full 4-in-1 show featuring the Outlaw Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, and
Pure Stocks. Also making their first appearance of the season will be the Short Track Truck Challenge Series. It is also
Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club (MARFC) night. Tickets for this action packed program are $12 for adults, teens 12 to 15
are $8, and kids 11 and younger are FREE to Kalamazoo's Saturday Night Entertainment Hot Spot, the Kalamazoo
Speedway!
